The Lumsdale Project is part of The Arkwright Society (A registered charity). They aim to freeze the remains to view.
The site is in the top 5 of water powered industrial archaeological sites.
In the 17th Century, at least one mill was in operation in the upper section of the valley
By the 18th Century, there were at least two more mills lower down (one grinding corn and the other fuling cloth).
In 1780 there was extensive redevelopment on the upper pond to provide sufficient water supply to power the cotton mill.
The Bone Mill crushed bones for fertiliser in the 17th Century.
The Paint Mill crushed barytes (minerals) for paint.
It stopped being used in the 20th Century.
